Tools updated

After a revieweing and tuning process (by the one who never sleeps, Julien Lavergne) the additional tools for Lubuntu has been updated. There are changes in version numbers (lubuntu-control-center 0.3 and lxkeymap 0.3) and wheight (recompiled and reduced unneeded size). Now the tools are from the official Lubuntu Desktop PPA (ensuring compatibility). Jump to the tools section and download while hot!

DEFT 6 Linux

Lubuntu must be doing it well, so there’re lots and lots of new derivatives growing up everywhere. This one, DEFT Linux version 6, is a forensic purpose distro, and comes in both Linux and Windows versions (aka DEFT 3 Extra), with specific tools for helping police and investigators to deal with “criminal” computers 🙂 .

WattOS R3

Another flavour of Ubuntu (Maverick based) using our beloved LXDE desktop: WattOS R3. It comes with a lot of improvements, a wide range of applications and ease of use. The distro includes Foobnix as media player, the photo editor Fotoxx, PCManFM with network support, KeePassX password manager, the standard planner Osmo, RedNotebook for creating personal diaries, and Firefox as the default web browser. Only available for x86 (32 bit) computers.

Zorin OS 4 Lite

I must talk about another “derivative” distribution born upon Lubuntu, this called Zorin OS. Using an LXDE desktop, it has unique desktop configuration features, like Background Plus (plays animations in the background), Splash Screen Manager (self explanatory), and Look Changer (switches look to a Windows, MacOSX or Gnome like). This distro can look familiar to everyone and maintains the speed and lightness of Lubuntu.

Artwork section added

Do you have a Lubuntu version installed and preffer another (oldie) artwork? Or have the old release and want to use the newer one? Easy, just pick up the theme package in the new brand artwork section and, voilà, you’ll have any released theme.

You’d be careful about replacing an existing folder with these ones. Do this only if you’re sure about what you’re doing.

Ultimate Lite 2.8

Another derivative from Lubuntu (mmm, we’re inspiration for others, good). Ultimate Lite edition, with a different applications pack, like VLC, Firefox, gEdit (?), Ultamatix (a 3rd party tool for installing codecs and other stuff) and LXDE or Lubuntu original themes replaced by the Blue Deck theme pack. An image is worth a thousand words:

Lubuntu Natty Narwhal alpha 1

Julien said: “the Alpha 1 is a snapshot of the actual development, with minimum tests. Expect others breakages until Alpha 2. However, you can easily test it
under virtualbox or qemu”.

Buggy (as known  black background, the panel appears in the middle of the screen, checking the CD fail, start menu not correctly translated, splash screen may fall-back to Ubuntu text one, istaller doesn’t install correct restricted packages).

Anyway, if you want to test it go to downloads section and grab it while hot.

Unity looks familiar

Mm, am I the only one? Did you get an eye on this “revolutionary interface” for Ubuntu called Unity? Doesn’t it remember a lot on WindowMaker? Ok, it’s not enough talking about “little squares” that launch things, but they could improve the dock to be a bit different than tne old-school MacOS or GNUStep one. Have a look and compare (btw, windowmaker is the one at the right :D):
