Lubuntu 24.04.1 LTS is Released!

Thanks to all the hard work from our contributors, Lubuntu 24.04.1 LTS has been released. With the codename Noble Numbat, Lubuntu 24.04 is the 26th release of Lubuntu, the 12th release of Lubuntu with LXQt as the default desktop environment.

Support lifespan

Lubuntu 24.04 LTS will be supported for 3 years until April 2027. Our main focus will be on this and future releases.

What’s The Difference Between Lubuntu 24.04 LTS And This Release?

Lubuntu 24.04.1 is a set of images produced for convenience so that a fresh install of the latest Lubuntu LTS does not require as many updates after install. If you do system updates regularly, you are already running Lubuntu 24.04.1 LTS, and if you install Lubuntu on a system using a Lubuntu 24.04 LTS image and do system updates, that system will also then be running Lubuntu 24.04.1 LTS.

What is Lubuntu?

Lubuntu is an official Ubuntu flavor which uses the LXQt desktop environment. The project’s goal is to provide a lightweight yet functional Linux distribution based on a rock-solid Ubuntu base. Lubuntu provides a simple, modern and powerful graphical user interface, and comes with a wide variety of applications so you can browse, email, chat, play, and be productive.

You can find the following major applications and toolkits installed by default in this release:

  • LXQt 1.4.0
  • Qt 5.15.13
  • Mozilla Firefox as shipped in the snap package, the version present on the ISO is version 129.0.2.
  • LibreOffice 24.2.5.2
  • VLC 3.0.20
  • Featherpad 1.4.1
  • Discover Software Center 5.27.11

You can find a variety of other applications installed which aim to enhance your experience while staying out of the way of your normal workflow.

The Lubuntu Global Team has been created to foster communities in non-English languages and locales, and includes Hans Möller, Noumeno, and Jyoti Gomes as the initial drivers of the project. An up-to-date list can be found on our Links page, but the existing groups include: Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Italian, Chinese, German, Japanese, Arabic, and French. If you would like to start a language group, join our development channel and talk with the Global Team. At minimum, you should have a few interested drivers of the community, and at least one administrator that speaks English.

Lubuntu 22.04.3 LTS is Released!

Thanks to all the hard work from our contributors, Lubuntu 22.04.3 LTS has been released. With the codename Jammy Jellyfish, Lubuntu 22.04 is the 22nd release of Lubuntu, the eighth release of Lubuntu with LXQt as the default desktop environment.

What’s The Difference Between Lubuntu 22.04 LTS And This Release?

Lubuntu 22.04.3 is a set of images produced for convenience so that a fresh install of the latest Lubuntu LTS does not require as many updates after install (as Lubuntu continues to release Stable Release Updates and security fixes to make your experience as smooth as possible and to fix any bugs, if you want to help us out with this, see below, we always need more help). If you do system updates regularly, you are already running Lubuntu 22.04.3 LTS, and if you install Lubuntu on a system using a Lubuntu 22.04 LTS image and do system updates, that system will also then be running Lubuntu 22.04.3 LTS.

This Lubuntu 22.04.3 media also contains the updated HWE 6.2 kernel stack (from Lubuntu 23.04) where prior 22.04 media contained only the 5.15 GA kernel stack or 5.19 HWE kernel stack.

Installer

Lubuntu uses the Calamares system installer in place of the Ubiquity installer that most other flavors use. 22.04 ships with Calamares 3.2.60. For a full/erase disk install, we have added the option of a swapfile by default. The swapfile size is initially set to 512 MB. The option for no swap is still available as a dropdown selection.

For a full description of the new features and fixes, see the upstream announcements for 3.2.60. You’ll note this is a later calamares than prior Lubuntu 22.04 LTS media provided.

Please note: The change of firefox to snap package, results in the browser being slower to start. It does not impact execution or subsequent runs during that session. The reason for this is the setting up of the confined environment in which snaps run, and decompress the squashfs, with privacy and security benefits. This is very noticeable on first run especially with live media having improved significantly when compared to prior Lubuntu 22.04 LTS media.

Lubuntu Focal Fossa 20.04 LTS Wallpaper Contest

The Lubuntu Team is pleased to announce we are running a Focal Fossa wallpaper competition, giving you, our community, the chance to submit, and get your favorite wallpapers included in the Lubuntu 20.04 LTS (Long Term Support) release.

Show Your Artwork

To enter, simply post your image into this thread on our Discourse forum.

We will close this thread on February 25th, 2020 and the judging will begin. No late submissions will be accepted.

The wallpaper selection committee will select the finalists for the Lubuntu Members to vote on.

Rules

There are a few rules though. Please make sure you are happy to submit your work under these rules before you post it. Posting your images here indicates acceptance of the rules.

Ownership

The images you upload must be yours. If you see an image which you know to be misrepresented please flag it and we will take care of it.

Size

Please don’t upload the full-size image to discourse. Large images will slow down this thread so please use smaller images here. In due course, we will contact submitters for access to finalist images, which should be at least 2560×1600.

Quality

As previously mentioned, the final image size should be at least 2560×1600 pixels. Images much smaller than this won’t scale up well. Equally, images with a lot of compression artifacts won’t look good. Your image won’t be accepted if the quality is low.

Watermarking

Personal watermarks should be removed. Acceptable watermarks include the “Lubuntu” name, Lubuntu logo, “Focal Fossa” release name, and “20.04” release version. Any images with other watermarks will not be accepted. Watermarks should be kept small and unobtrusive to the image.

License

Your image(s) must be licensed under the CC BY-SA 4.06 or CC BY 4.03 license. If you do not specify a license in your post then we will assume that you are licensing the image under the CC BY-SA 4.0. By entering the competition you are agreeing to these license terms.

Xenial Xerus Beta 1 released

The Lubuntu Release Team is happy to announce the first beta milestone of Xenial Xerus (to become 16.04 LTS in April) has now been released! A few bug fixes have come since the last alpha, but one piece of excitement is that this new milestone includes the 4.4 kernel that will be shipping with the final product.

Make sure to read the release notes to be aware of known bugs and workarounds. Your help would be most appreciated in terms of helping confirm/troubleshoot/triage those bugs, as well as filing any new bugs you find.

Speaking of bugs, though we’re still working on LXQt for a future release, we do expect to have some bug fixes for LXDE in the final release, so make sure to keep watching for announcements, especially on the Lubuntu Development mailing list.

Lubuntu Xenial Xerus with LXQt— on PowerPC!

We reported how to run upcoming Lubuntu desktop LXQt in Xenial Xerus on a Raspberry Pi 2 and now, thanks to tester Herminio Hernandez, Jr. (and his iBook G4), we can confirm that it works on PowerPC machines!

To replicate:

  1. install a Xenial Xerus 16.04 image (the Alpha 2 just came out!)
  2. follow the instructions on the wiki to install the LXQt packages

Previous to having the LXQt packages in the repositories, PPC testers were unable to use the PPA because Launchpad didn’t build for architectures outside of i386 or amd64. The other benefit is that it should be less cutting edge and thus more stable.

Since we release PowerPC images only for LTS versions and since we’re not planning on releasing LXQt for Xenial, there will be a bit more waiting for PPC users, but at least in this way, a pretty solid preview can be obtained.

Should you follow this procedure, please report any bugs against the appropriate package itself, since all of the necessary packages are in the repos.

Meanwhile, PPC testers can get back to ISO testing the LXDE Xenial Xerus image, which is due 21 April 2016.

Lubuntu 16.04 LTS will use kernel 4.4 LTS

The Ubuntu Linux kernel team has announced that the Linux kernel in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS has been upgraded to version 4.4, the latest stable release made available.

Linus Torvalds released a new stable version of the Linux kernel just a few days ago, and the Ubuntu developers have been quick to integrate it into the latest build of Ubuntu 16.04.

The team has been tracking the 4.4 branch for quite some time, and they had almost all of the RC versions, so it was only natural to get the stable 4.4 as soon as it made an appearance.

Lubuntu 14.04.3 LTS

The Ubuntu team is pleased to announce the release of Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS
(Long-Term Support) for its Desktop, Server, Cloud, and Core products,
as well as other flavours of Ubuntu with long-term support. And that includes, of course, Lubuntu.

We have expanded our hardware enablement offering since 12.04, and with
14.04.3, this point release contains an updated kernel and X stack for
new installations to support new hardware across all our supported
architectures, not just x86.
As usual, this point release includes many updates, and updated
installation media has been provided so that fewer updates will need to
be downloaded after installation. These include security updates and
corrections for other high-impact bugs, with a focus on maintaining
stability and compatibility with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.
