Lubuntu 22.04 Backports PPA – LXQt 1.1 Call For Testing

The Lubuntu Team is happy to announce that the Lubuntu Backports PPA is now available as a beta. Please see details below to help us test it.

What is the Lubuntu Backports PPA?

Our Backports PPA is modeled after Kubuntu’s. It exists to provide the latest LXQt desktop stack on top of a stable Ubuntu base. (The concept could also be considered similar to KDE Neon.)

As time goes on, our development focus will continue to be on new releases, and we plan on landing and testing changes there prior to pushing them to Backports. That being said, this is a perfect middle ground between stability and new features that users of all experience levels will be able to enjoy.

Is this a separate edition of Lubuntu?

Nope, this is still the same Lubuntu you know and love, you’re just getting new features available on the regular releases earlier than everyone else on the LTS release. You’re jumping on an in-between track.

Why is it still in beta if you already tested it in the development release?

The development release has a different audience than LTS users. LTS users may notice changes that development release users may not, and vice versa. Also, this is our first run of backports. Future updates should be smoother.

Okay, so how do I help?

The Backports Staging PPA is available here. You can add the PPA using the following command:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:lubuntu-dev/backports-staging

Please test it and give us feedback (Matrix preferred). One thing to note, YOU SHOULD NOT KEEP THIS PPA ENABLED, ENABLE THE OFFICIAL BACKPORTS PPA WHEN IT COMES OUT AND INSTALL PACKAGES FROM HERE SELECTIVELY.

We plan on releasing this repository officially on Tuesday, July 19th, 2022 assuming no showstopper issues present themselves.

(If demand is popular, we may also release an ISO alongside 22.04.1 with the Backports PPA enabled. Please let us know in the comments or on social media if you want that.)

Lubuntu 21.10 End of Life and Current Support Statuses

Lubuntu 21.10 (Impish Indri) was released October 14, 2021 and will reach End of Life on Thursday, July 14, 2022. This means that after that date there will be no further security updates or bugfixes released.

After July 14th, the only supported releases of Lubuntu will be 20.04 and 22.04. All other releases of Lubuntu will be considered unsupported, and will no longer receive any further updates from the Lubuntu team.

The supported upgrade path from Lubuntu 21.10 is via Lubuntu 22.04. You can find instructions on how to upgrade your Lubuntu installation here at our manual page.

Lubuntu Kinetic Kudu 22.10 Artwork Contest

The Lubuntu Team is pleased to announce we are running a Kinetic Kudu artwork competition, giving you, our community, the chance to submit, and get your favorite wallpapers for both the desktop and the greeter/login screen (SDDM) included in the Lubuntu 22.10 release.

Show Your Artwork

To enter, simply post your image into this thread on our Discourse forum.

We will close this thread on August 4th, 2022 and the judging will begin. No late submissions will be accepted.

The artwork selection committee will select the finalists for the Lubuntu Members to vote on.

We are after two suitable images for Lubuntu 22.10. If selected, one will be for the main wallpaper, and another for the greeter/login (SDDM background).

Rules

There are a few rules though. Please make sure you are happy to submit your work under these rules before you post it. Posting your images here indicates acceptance of the rules.

Ownership

The images you upload must be yours. If you see an image which you know to be misrepresented please flag it and we will take care of it.

Size

Please don’t upload the full-size image to discourse. Large images will slow down this thread so please use smaller images here. In due course, we will contact submitters for access to finalist images, which should be at least 2560×1600. As before, if your requested full-size image isn’t received in time (to be packaged), it won’t be included.

Quality

As previously mentioned, the final image size should be at least 2560×1600 pixels. Images much smaller than this won’t scale up well. Equally, images with a lot of compression artifacts won’t look good. Your image won’t be accepted if the quality is low.

Watermarking

Personal watermarks should be removed. Acceptable watermarks include the “Lubuntu” name, Lubuntu logo, “Kinetic Kudu” release name, and “22.10” release version. Any images with other watermarks will not be accepted. Watermarks should be kept small and unobtrusive to the image.

License

Your image(s) must be licensed under the CC BY-SA 4.06 or CC BY 4.03 license. If you do not specify a license in your post then we will assume that you are licensing the image under the CC BY-SA 4.0. By entering the competition you are agreeing to these license terms.

Additional note: If your image is smaller than 2560×1600 and is so great you feel it should be considered, submit it anyway with a note on what resolution can be supplied. We may decide it’s so good we must include it as well.

Lubuntu 22.04 LTS is Released!

Thanks to all the hard work from our contributors, Lubuntu 22.04 LTS has been released. With the codename Jammy Jellyfish, Lubuntu 22.04 is the 22nd release of Lubuntu, the eighth release of Lubuntu with LXQt as the default desktop environment.

Support lifespan

Lubuntu 22.04 LTS will be supported for 3 years until April 2025. Our main focus will be on this and future releases.

Lubuntu 21.10 remains supported until July 2022 and Lubuntu 20.04 LTS will be supported until April 2023. For 21.10 and 20.04 LTS, we are limiting changes to critical fixes and underlying system changes shipped with all other Ubuntu flavors.

Please note: The change of firefox to snap package, results in the browser being slower to start. It does not impact execution or subsequent runs during that session. The reason for this is the setting up of the confined environment in which snaps run, and decompress the squashfs, with privacy and security benefits. This is very noticeable on first run especially with live media.

Lubuntu 21.04 (Hirsute Hippo) was released April 22, 2021 and will reach End of Life on Thursday, January 20, 2022. This means that after that date there will be no further security updates or bugfixes released. We highly recommend that you update to 21.10 as soon as possible if you are still running 21.04.

After January 20th, the only supported releases of Lubuntu will be 20.04 and 21.10. All other releases of Lubuntu will be considered unsupported, and will no longer receive any further updates from the Lubuntu team.

This means that after that date there will be no further security updates or bugfixes released. We highly recommend that you update to 21.04 as soon as possible if you are still running 20.10.
