Muelle, by Manuel Puentes

I personally want to thank everyone that in any form made a
contribution to this contest – competitors, voters, promoters,
everyone. Also, a big thank you goes to Guillaume Le Roy who once
again helped us host our contest at Picomp – a great tool
and service of his that we’ve used for several contests now.

Next contest will be held sometime in March and will decide our
default wallpapers for Lubuntu 14.04!

Beta 1 is out

Ubuntu QA finally cooked the first beta of Lubuntu 13.10 a.k.a. Saucy Salamander. You can grab it and install for (I never get tired of saying this) testing purposes only. Goto to Ubuntu QA and choose the flavour you want. Or go to download straight forward for 32bit, 64bit, Mac or PowerPC.

Also, I’d like to remind you that you can comment, criticize or just say whatever you want at the Lubuntu official Facebook page.

Incoming upgrades

OBConf-QT

The QT version of OBConf is ready. PCMan has ported using the QT libraries to match the LXDE-QT or the upcoming Razor-QT desktops. There’re a few things that do not work, such as font settings, dock settings, theme previews, etc. Anyway this app is almost fully functional.

Gnumeric 1.12.6

One of the office components has been updated too. This version improves the support for Open Document formats and Microsoft Excel. Lubuntu includes now 1.12.4 and it’s supposed that this update will be ready in a few days and our systems will be upgraded.

Happy 20th b’day, Debian!

Original balloons by AJ

We’re glad to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Debian, the legendary Linux distribution which Lubuntu is based on (thus was Ubuntu), the first one taking care of the really free software and the implication on building a multiarchitecture system.

For celebrating, Debian invited everybody to the DebConf 13, a conference for developers at Le Camp, Vaumarcus (Switzerland). So, Happy Birthday to your awesome OS, Ian Murdock!

Skippy-XD PPA

We have found a new PPA for our beloved Skippy-XD tool. If you don’t remember what it is, just have a look at the article (now updated) on this blog. If you want to install this compilation from GIT (another “latest” apps repository) you can do it the easy way, having no more depending on DEB downloads and ensure updates. Just open LXTerminal and execute these two command lines:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:landronimirc/skippy-xd-daily
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install skippy-xd

That’s all. Now if you followed the article guide mentioned you should have a cool Exposé-like effect on your desktop.

Lubuntu 13.10 wallpaper contest

Alexander Andjelkovic, from the Lubuntu Artwork Team, is proud to announce the new  wallpaper contest. As 13.10 is getting closer, it’s time to announce the community wallpaper contest for the new Saucy Salamander release. The contest will decide five additional wallpapers that will be included by default with Lubuntu 13.10.

Submissions are done through this Flickr group:
http://www.flickr.com/groups/lubuntu1310contest/

And you’ll find all the necessary information about the contest there as well. Polling will start ASAP after the submission deadline and will be announced to the public.

Spread the word and good luck to all contestants!

Alpha 2

I do not recommend installing any alpha, unless you want to test (and possibly crash) your computer. Some changes you will find on this new release are:

  • Using now Firefox instead of Chromium as default browser
  • XScreensaver has been removed
  • ZRam added, enabling the desktop installer to work on lower RAM machines
  • Updated artwork (icons, new wallpaper, etc)

CD images (yes, it still fits on a CD!) are here.

Here comes the salamander

The Lubuntu Artwork Team is proud to show you all the new default artwork, including the wallpaper (and a radical scaly deviation for reptiles :D), the improved GTK2/3 themes, a new sexy app button, and the (always) evolving icons. There’s a lot of work during the release cycle, as upgrades that all users will receive. Have a look:

Also, I’d like to thank the 3rd collaborators we had to make this icon theme. It’s lovely how you’re involved in this project that is (I hope) making Lubuntu a bit more famous. And remember, feedback is appreciated!
