Box support for MATE

The Box theme support continues growing, covering more and more environments. Now we’re celebrating that the MATE desktop environment, a GTK3 fork of the traditional Gnome2, will have its own Ubuntu flavour, named Ubuntu MATE Remix. Once tested, I noticed I missed something familiar, our beloved Lubuntu spirit on it. So here begins the (experimental) theme support. It’ll be available to download soon.

Edit: It’s available now! Get it while it’s hot at Artwork section!

PCManFM 1.2.1

Another update of our file manager PCManFM, tones of bug fixes and new implementations:

  • fixed dragging and dropping icons behavior
  • fixed icons positioning
  • fixed resetting cursor in location bar
  • corrected folder popup update on loading
  • reordered ‘View’ menu item
  • implemented drawing icons of dragged items
  • etc.

Also a huge update and bug fixing in libfm libraries (1.2.1) too. You can use this updated version in Lubuntu Trusty Tahr. For that you must add the Lubuntu Daily PPA if you hadn’t do it. Just open LXTerminal and type these commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:lubuntu-dev/lubuntu-daily
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install pcmanfm

LXQt now has “full” Qt5 support

Repost from LXDE Blog:

After the first official public release 0.7, the LXQt team is working on making it better. Our recent focus is fixing existing bugs and migrating from Qt4 to Qt5, which is required if we want to support Wayland. Now we had something to show. The latest source code in our git repository can be compiled with Qt5 (by just passing -DUSE_QT5=ON flag to cmake).

Building with Qt4 is still supported until the next release, but later we’ll focus on Qt5. Recently we also got some patches from the community and also a new developer joined us. We’re now fixing some remaining bugs. Hopefully we can have 0.8 release soon.

Lubuntu 14.10 alpha 1

Phill Whiteside, our QA and test head, is proud to communicate:
It’s that time again: time to officially start testing for this cycle. Alpha 1 is set to be released Thursday, so we need to test over the next couple days. You can see the rest of the schedule for the cycle here, by the way.
All images are available at QA. If you’re not familiar with testing, it’s an easy process and a simple way to get involved. More information is in the Testing area. Testers needed!

LXQt-Admin: System admin tools for LXQt arrived

It’s known that system admin tools for LXQt were lacking.
This is no longer true.  A new component lxqt-admin landed int our git repo. Please see the screenshots. 🙂 These are “desktop-independent” pure Qt tools based on system-tool-backends.

lxqt-admin-time: Tool to configure date and time.

lxqt-admin-user: Tool to manage users and groups.

We know that LXQt is not good enough, but it will getting better and better. Long live LXQt, the classic desktop!

PPA for LTS packages

As many of you already know, Lubuntu 14.04 is an LTS release. That means we have a lot of time to fix bugs and upload newer packages. Julien Lavergne has recently posted a new PPA for that “maintenance” purpose. If you want to upgrade all your system, including the artwork ;), open a terminal and paste these:

sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:lubuntu-dev/staging
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

You’ll notice that artwork will change, nm-applet is fixed now (bye to some wi-fi connections problems) and solved the autostart issue. Have fun!

Finishing LXQT

The guys from LXQT desktop (formerly Razor-QT) are finishing all details to make it usable and stable. The new desktop is able to do common tasks, using the file manager and configure the look and feel (even I’ve had some troubles to enable Box theme). But this promises to be a great desktop, and fast. One polished the RAM consumption (see LXDE blog for details) the DE will be ready for everyday’s use.

I doesn’t look so bad, does it? What do you think about adding a QT session to Lubuntu?

Trusty CD cover

As you may know Canonical has released another wallet for Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, as it is an LTS version it may deserve that. So we have one too. And you all know me, I’m so “Canonicalized” I only publish “official” artwork when Canonical does, but this time for our flavour Lubuntu.

You can download the Lubuntu wallet here. It includes a normal CD / DVD cover, a disc imprint and a Lightscribe version, both with and without hole (thanks for that advice) with, of course, source SVG included. I hope you like it!
