Cairo Composite Manager

Beautify your Lubuntu with this handy tool. Thanks to Sergey Davidoff, who shared his PPA. I’ve already recommended xcompmgr, but it’s difficult to config because it’s CLI (command line) only. This great app has a nice config gui among other things, like plugins, wide settings, and much more. Now it’s available for Lubuntu 11.10 (or any other Ubuntu flavour).You can install this by typing this in a terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:shnatsel/staging
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cairo-compmgr

And look for it at the system menu. Have fun!

Lubuntu Software Center icon

Not too much to say. Just a new icon for the Lubuntu Software Center. Not using the Ubuntu standard anymore (not appropriate, we think). And so on, a possibly redesign for the wholñe application is coming. I hope you like it!

Happy Halloween!

I’d like to thank to the people who downloaded the distro, because now Lubuntu hits the list with an incredible 7th score position! (see that on DistroWatch). And of course, I’d like to thank the Lubuntu crew for their wonderful job done with this release, and that’s why Canonical decided to “adopt us” in the Ubuntu family, for those well-done things and a never-ending illusion. You’re the best!

Lubuntu CD wallets

As Lubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot has been released, and new bunch of marketing pieces should appear along the release. So here they are: a brand new CD cover wallet, a disc imprint and a Lightscribe one. You can download them all at the marketing wiki page (search for the 11.10 version).

ZevenOS Neptune 2.0 (LXDE)

Another release of ZevenOS, the Minimal Edition, that ships LXDE environment. Codenamed “Next Generation”, this version comes with LXDE (obviously), PCManFM (along with LXDE), Viewnior, Iceweasel, Icedove, Gnome-Mplayer and Deadbeef. More information and downloads here.

Lubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) released

Finally, the long awaited release is here. Notes from Julien Lavergne, the Lubuntu team leader:

ISOs are now build with Ubuntu official build system
alternate ISOs are available
many updates from LXDE (most components had official releases)
build with recommended packages by default
use recommends instead of depends for most of components of lubuntu-desktop meta-package
register correctly LXDE as a desktop environment by xdg tools
switch to xfce4-power-manager for power management
add a microblog client: pidgin-microblog
new theme made by Rafael Laguna

Lubuntu 11.10 beta 2

Sure you already know that our “big brother” Ubuntu released the second beta for the Oneiric Ocelot version. So here goes the “little one” Lubuntu 11.10 beta 2. I just wanted to mention this like an echo of Julien Lavergne’s announcement. And as he said, this is a beta, so remember:

but you could find new interface bugs (feedback appreciated)

Lubuntu Software Center

Lubuntu right now lacks a Software Center, as his big brother Ubuntu, so Stephen Smally is developing a great app for this. Lubuntu Software Center. You can install and test it executing this on a terminal (the whole line):

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:lubuntu-desktop/ppa && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install lubuntu-software-center

Remember its pre-alpha stage. But I highly recommend using it and, please, report any bug you can find. The developers always thank that kind of actions.

Fedora 16 “Verne”

The new artwork for the Fedora release 16, called Verne, has been presented. Unlike version 15 artwork, Lovelock, that was fully rejected by the community (how does their voting system work?) this one seems to be more lucky.
