Lubuntu official ISOs!

After a few years working, three releases with a hard work within, and a really great effort it arrives the support from Canonical (making it official). Mark Shuttleworth said our work would become a reality and being part of the Ubuntu familyt would arrive. Words from Julien Lavergne, leader of the project:

After 2 years of work, and 3 “unofficial” releases (10.04, 10.10 and 11.04), we had recently an official go from the Technical Board and ISO images are now made like other Ubuntu flavors. I hope the 11.10 will be the 1st official release of Lubuntu as a member of the Ubuntu family.

Also, these news arrived to almost every Ubuntu dedicated blog and news feeder, as WebUpd8, Lffl (grazie mille, Roberto) or UbuntuLook, for mentioning some. So, from this blog, I would like to thank to all readers, those who just interested about the project and other ones who pointed some suggestions and changes for improving the desktop look and feel. Also would thanks to the crew, the Lubuntu and LXDE teams. And special thanks to Julien for believing in me all these years.

Thank you very much!

Zorin OS 5 Lite

The Zorin group has recently released the Zorin OS 5 Lite, a renewed Ubuntu based operating system with similar features and look from Microsoft Windows, making users easily migrate to Linux.

The system is using the LXDE desktop and includes GNU Paint and Simple Scan, Google and Pidgin, Abiword and Gnumeric, and Audacious, Xfburn, etc (similar choices in Lubuntu), a browser chooser and a look changer.

A few things

Long time since last update. Ok, I’m back and have a few news for you. First of all is mentioning a new version of the distro Trisquel mini, using LXDE desktop (and, let me say it, an artwork that reminds me Lubuntu 😀 ). The goal of this distro is being absolutely “free”, without any proprietary apps or drivers. Because of this it’s one of the free GNU distribution list.

Another great thing is the update of PCManFM. Now the fodler tree is back, among other changes and updates. And it’s getting ready for the GTK3 libraries change. It will be uploaded to the main repositories in a few days.

DEFT 6 Linux

Lubuntu must be doing it well, so there’re lots and lots of new derivatives growing up everywhere. This one, DEFT Linux version 6, is a forensic purpose distro, and comes in both Linux and Windows versions (aka DEFT 3 Extra), with specific tools for helping police and investigators to deal with “criminal” computers 🙂 .

WattOS R3

Another flavour of Ubuntu (Maverick based) using our beloved LXDE desktop: WattOS R3. It comes with a lot of improvements, a wide range of applications and ease of use. The distro includes Foobnix as media player, the photo editor Fotoxx, PCManFM with network support, KeePassX password manager, the standard planner Osmo, RedNotebook for creating personal diaries, and Firefox as the default web browser. Only available for x86 (32 bit) computers.

Zorin OS 4 Lite

I must talk about another “derivative” distribution born upon Lubuntu, this called Zorin OS. Using an LXDE desktop, it has unique desktop configuration features, like Background Plus (plays animations in the background), Splash Screen Manager (self explanatory), and Look Changer (switches look to a Windows, MacOSX or Gnome like). This distro can look familiar to everyone and maintains the speed and lightness of Lubuntu.

Ultimate Lite 2.8

Another derivative from Lubuntu (mmm, we’re inspiration for others, good). Ultimate Lite edition, with a different applications pack, like VLC, Firefox, gEdit (?), Ultamatix (a 3rd party tool for installing codecs and other stuff) and LXDE or Lubuntu original themes replaced by the Blue Deck theme pack. An image is worth a thousand words:

ZevenOS 3.0

Another great OS has been released. Ok, it’s not Lubuntu, but it’s based on Maverick, so it could be considered as a “brother” kind to our distro, and maintained by our collaborator Leszek Lesner. Have a look and you’ll find a nice BeOS-ish desktop and a bunch of applications that accomplish every possible daily need. More info about this release here.
