Lubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) Released!

Thanks to all the hard work from our contributors, Lubuntu 16.10 has been released! With the codename Yakkety Yak, Lubuntu 16.10 is the 11th release of Lubuntu, with support until July 2017.

We even have Lenny the Lubuntu mascot dressed up for the occasion!

What is Lubuntu?

Lubuntu is an official Ubuntu flavor based on the Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment (LXDE). The project’s goal is to provide a lightweight yet functional distribution. Lubuntu specifically targets older machines with lower resources, but also runs great on newer hardware. Along with a simple but usuable graphical user interface, Lubuntu comes with a wide variety of applications chosen for their small footprint so you can browse, email, chat, play, and be productive.

Where can I download it?

On the Ubuntu cdimage server, we have images for the following architectures:

  • amd64 (commonly referred to as 64-bit)
  • i386 (commonly referred to as 32-bit)

The release notes are here if you wish to read them. We have left out some notes that are common to all flavors, so read the Ubuntu release notes if you wish.

What’s improved since 16.04?

  • We now ship with Linux Kernel 4.8.
  • General bug fix release as we prepare to switch to LXQt.
  • LXDE components have been updated with bug fixes.
  • The artwork has received an update.

System Requirements

Lubuntu is a good operating system for many old computers, but not for all of them. Some computers have too little horsepower or memory. A rule of thumb is that the computer should not be more than 10 years old.

Memory (RAM)

For advanced internet services like Google+, YouTube, Google Drive, and Facebook, your computer needs at least 1 GB of RAM.

For local programs like LibreOffice and simple browsing habits, your computer needs at least 512 MB of RAM.

Processor (CPU)

The minimum specification for CPU is Pentium 4 or Pentium M or AMD K8. Older processors are too slow and the AMD K7 has problems with Flash video.

How do I get support?

Our support channel is #lubuntu on freenode IRC. If you don’t have an IRC client, click the link in the earlier sentence, type in a nickname, press start, state your question and press Enter to speak.

We also have the lubuntu-users mailing list. Send an email to lubuntu-users AT lists DOT ubuntu DOT com.

How do I contribute?

We always need more help! If you would like to contribute, head over to our Getting Involved page. If you have any questions about contributing, please join #lubuntu-devel on freenode or email the lubuntu-devel mailing list at lubuntu-devel AT lists DOT ubuntu DOT com.

Known issues

For known issues, please see the release notes.

Unfortunately, we could not get LXQt ready in time for 16.10, so Lubuntu 16.10 ships with LXDE.

And for fun…

  1. Hi!! I want to congratulate your for Lubuntu!

I have a one year old, but very cheap PC and wanted to install a distribution based on Pacman packet manager and LXDE, so I tried Archlinux, Antergos, Majori, and they all froze my computer. Then I tried Mint, but it was also freezing!

Lubuntu was the only to work flawlessly!!

    Keep the good project!

I would like to donate to Lubuntu so your project can keep growing, but I didnt find anything for this (only general Ubuntu donation, but I really want to send the money specifcally to Lubuntu).

  2. Did anyone notice a longer startup after upgrading the system ? I went from 30 seconds (16.04) to 1 minute (16.10), after that no major performance problem.

I upgraded directly from the existing system and not by doing a fresh install (which I think is boring ^^).

  3. hello I have a problem when I try to connect to ubuntu one to download software tells me the username or password is invalidated

  4. I’m new to Linux. I installed Lubuntu with no problems. I can go online with Firefox browser with no problems but find it a bit slow so I installed Chromium-browser but it won’t go online. I get Ah snap msg instead. I’ve tried uninstalling & reinstalling the browser but it did not work. Any suggestions?

  5. I think that I will stay on the latest LTS release (16.04.1) for now… can you update your download page for Lubuntu 14.04.5, you still only have 14.04.4 available in the Downloads section of the website.

  6. I see after downloading and spending countless hours trying to configure a printer, Ubuntu is not much closer to being a usable OS by the masses unless you are a computer science egghead. Instead of writing a bunch of wacky distros ,why wont the Linux community just try to solve peoples problems? By the way Canon pixar MG3620.
Could not find anything in updates.

  7. Lubuntu was a very pleasant surprise to me after my last experience with Linux in 2006-2008. It seems lot of good work has been done. I want to donate to you guys to continue improving. Please post some data or local representations. Do you have representative in Bulgaria?

  8. Installed Lubuntu Yakkety Yak successfully on a 2.66 Mhz Celeron with 1gb ram. So far, with only software updates, added MPplayer, restricted extras I have had no performance issues.
This is encouraging. Well done to the developers.

  9. Hello
i’m new to lubuntu i wanted to install it on my windows PC but want to retain it(dual boot)….if i download it from site given how can this be done..?PLZ help

    • You have to tell the installer to use both OSes (option like “install alongside Windows”. You’re not losing Windows. But you will on the opposite (Windows tends to erase everything during its setup).

  10. Love Lubuntu 16.04. Installed on ASUS X51L, 2GB RAM – perfectly working. Then I tried on HP 2570p, works fine, apart from youtube when I experienced screen tearing and horizontal lines. It could be related to intel graphics. Considering to try 16.10…

  11. 16.10 Lubuntu 32 bit does not update correctly:
It´s a fruitless endeavor, no matter which Server
is “automatically” or manually chosen. I see that over
90+ MB is said to be updateable, & further that portions are
from “untrusted” sources [Intel graphics Updater 2.0.4 ?? ]
Thereafter presents two options: CANCEL or OK
    — Neither of which work —
